A 12-year-old boy has died in Phalombe district after drowning in a dam at Mwayiwathu Irrigation Scheme.
Phalombe Police has confirmed the development and has identified the deceased as Mphatso Bires.
According to Phalombe Police Public Relations Officer Jimmy Kapanja, the incident occurred on Sunday, 17 October 2021 around 15:00 hours at Matemba village in the district when Bires went to the dam to swim alongside friends, but he never returned alive.
“The deceased is identified as Mphatso Bires and on the day, he and his friends left home and went to the dam in order to swim. In the process of swimming, the deceased went to a deep place where he failed to swim back and his colleagues tried to save him but they failed and one of his friends rushed to the house of the deceased and informed the parents,” said Kapanja.
Kapanja further said upon receipt of the sad news, the boy’s parents rushed to the scene where they found their son’s body floating.
Kapanja ruled out chances of foul play on Bires as postmortem conducted at Migowi Health Centre revealed that death was due to suffocation secondary to drowning.
“Later the matter was reported at Migowi Police Unit and police officers together with a Clinical officer of Migowi Health Center rushed to the scene and postmortem results revealed that the cause of death was due to suffocation secondary to drowning. No foul play suspected,” he said.
Mphatso Bires hailed from Matemba village Traditional Authority Nyezerera in Phalombe district.
