A 20 year old man in Ntchisi district has been convicted and sentenced to 18 years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling a 13-year-old standard 4 learner.
The man who has been identified as Selemani Nekhantani was convicted and sentenced by Senior Resident Magistrate Court in Ntchisi.
State prosecutor Sub Inspector Patrick Phambana told the court that the convict Selemani Nekhantani on March 19 2021 at Chorwe Village in the district of Ntchisi defiled the victim (name withheld) when she was coming from the market to buy sweet potatoes.
The State prosecutor pleaded for a stiffer punishment to deter would be offenders.
Appearing before court, the convict pleaded not guilty to a charge of defilement which is contrary to Section 138 of the Penal Code. This prompted the state to parade its witnesses, leading to his conviction.
Passing sentence, Senior Resident Magistrate Biar Kamanga concurred with the state’s submission for a stiff punishment and sentenced him to 18 years imprisonment with hard labour as a warning to other would-be offenders.
Selemani Nekhantani comes from Kambwiri Village in the area of Traditional Authority Kalumo in Ntchisi District.
