2022/23 football season kick-off shifted to 5 March

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has announced that the 2022-23 football season will kick off on March 5 with Charity Shield before the start of the TNM Super League a week later.

The decision has been made following Fam's Competitions Committee meeting held in Blantyre on Saturday where it was agreed to shift the date from the initial 26 February 2022.

Confirming the development, FAM Competitions and Communications Director Gomezgani Zakazaka said an official statement will be released soon.

“Indeed, the committee met but a statement will be released,” Zakazaka said.

Also responding to the issue, Super League of Malawi (Sulom) General Secretary Williams Banda said the changes have been made due to Club Licencing issues.

Teams such as Mighty Wanderers and Nyasa Big Bullets among others had complained that they had not enough time to prepare for the new season as some players were with the Malawi Football 1 Team at the African Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals in Cameroon.

Reacting to the news, Nyasa Bullets Chief Administrator Albert Chigoga welcomed the news and said preparations are in progress.

“We have been communicated to about the new dates. Our preparations are on track,” said Chigoga.

Civil Service United General Secretary Ronald Chiwaula was happy with the new dates.

“It is a welcome development and this will give us ample time to finalize some of the issues,” Chiwaula said.

In preparation for the new season, teams are busy with friendlies. Super League teams will be hoping to have a good season, having endured a weird, winding and long season in 2021 due to the Covid pandemic and restrictions.

Last season, Nyasa Big Bullets won their third consecutive title.
