4 parallel electricians arrested for tampering with ESCOM equipment in Dedza

Four men have been arrested at Magomero in Dedza district for tampering with Electricity Supply Commission of Malawi (ESCOM) equipment in the district.

The arrests follow a video that made circulation on social media showing parallel electricians working on an ESCOM pole in the district after being hired by one Mr. Mawindo who owns a maize meal in the area.

The men calling themselves Magomero ESCOM secret dealers have been working on electrical faults at Magomero and Chafumbwa in the district.

The four men are seen in the video working on a faulty line using wooden planks and without protective equipment.

ESCOM’s Public Relations Manager Innocent Chitosi said the men were hired by a maize mill owner to fix an electricity fault business premises.

According to Chitosi, the suspects used wooden ladder and did not have recommended tools and protective equipment.

He said the four men tampered with live electricity lines and a meter box.

Chitosi has indicated that such acts are not only criminal but also dangerous as they can spark fires that can lead to loss of lives and property.

“Such acts do not only damage ESCOM’s equipment, they also pose danger to society as fires can erupt due to improper handling of power lines,” said Chitosi.

Magomero area experience power cuts which among others are a result from tampering with the ESCOM equipment.
