51-year-old man gets 20 year IHL for defilement in Mzimba

Senior Resident Magistrate Court in Mzimba District has convicted and sentenced 51-year-old Finias Mlenje to 20 years imprisonment with hard labor for defiling a 16-year-old girl.

Mlenje defiled the girl at Euthini in Mzimba District.

Appearing before the court this week Tuesday, Mlenje denied the defilement charge which forced the state to parade witnesses who testified against the accused.

The court, therefore, convicted Mlenje after being satisfied with the evidence tendered in court by the state.

In mitigation, Mlenje asked the court to give him a lenient punishment, saying he was first offender and a family man.

But State Prosecutor, Henry Mkweche, asked the court to give out a stiffer punishment as cases of defilement are rampant in the district.

Therefore, Senior Resident Magistrate Mathews Msiska concurred with the state that cases of defilement are rampant in the district.

He then sentenced Mlenje to 240 months imprisonment with hard labor, saying the sentence was meant to serve as a deterrent to would-be offenders.

Finias Mlenje hails from Kanyemba Village in Traditional Authority Chindi in Mzimba District.
