Agriculture sector to steer manufacturing and Industrialization

Government has said a total agriculture transformation will help to foster manufacturing and industrialization sectors in the country. 

Minister of Trade and Industry, Mark Katsonga Phiri made the remarks Tuesday’ when she held talks with a delegation from Africa Agriculture Transformation Initiative (AATI) in Lilongwe.

He said agriculture remain the key sector in the provision of raw materials to the manufacturing and the growth of industrialization sector which could provide an opportunity of value addition to the agriculture products

The Minister said the country need to take advantage of the sector in order to boost its productivity saying this time around the country needs to export already made products not raw materials as it has been the case in the past years.

Phiri thanked AATI for making Malawi a priority to help in agriculture programmes so that the sector improves for the better 

“We have a lot of agriculture programmes in the country such as Mega farms and Shire Valley Transformation Programme which aim at improving agricultural productivity in order to serve the manufacturing sector,” he said 

The Minister said AATI interventions calls for the participation of the private sector to boosts the and agriculture production in the country

Phiri assured the AATI delegation that government of Malawi was more than willing to work to together with them in the agriculture sector as one way of improving the country’s economy. 

Executive Director for AATI, Safia Boly expressed gratitude to the government of Malawi for accepting AATI initiatives to be implemented in the country.

She hoped of possible agricultural transformation and unlocks some of the bottlenecks facing the country’s agriculture sector.

Boly added that engagement with various stakeholders s would help us to understand how with their view the establishment of Malawi Transformation Agency to be formed few months time.

She said the agency would help to contribute not only to the seven priority areas s it has been establishment by government of Malawi.
