Chakwera calls for protection of people with albinism
President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has challenged people in the country to be steadfast in protecting people with albinism from all forms of abuse.
Speaking when he graced 1 commemorations marking World Inter1 Albinism Awareness Day at Chigumula Community Ground on Saturday in Nkhotakota, Dr Chakwera said discrimination, stigmatisation and violence are the major vices against people with albinism.
"These things are terrible, all these three. What they have in common is that they are wrongful acts," he said.
Globally, the Day is observed on June 13 as sanctioned by the United Nations. Activities marking the day have been held under the theme of 'Exposing positive life for people with albinism.'
After the commemoration, Dr Chakwera proceeded to visit Nkhotakota Resource Centre in the Lakeshore District, where he appreciated interventions by the institution in helping the needy.
Records indicate that Malawi has about 134 thousand people with albinism.
