First Grade Magistrate Court in Mzuzu on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, ordered a 16- year-old boy to be sent to Chirwa Reformatory Center in Zomba for breaking into a building and committing a felony therein.
The Court heard through State Child Prosecutor, Sergeant Christina Shadreck, that the minor planned to commit the offense.
Shadreck further told the Court that the young offender planned the act as he broke the window of Voice of Livingstonia Radio Station building where he committed the offense and went away with two Computer sets.
The minor was charged with the offense of breaking into a building and committing a felony therein, contrary to section 311 of the Penal Code.
However he pleaded not guilty to the charge leveled against him, and this prompted the State to parade four witnesses who testified against him.
Prosecutor Shadreck submitted to the Court that the young offender infringed the moral values of Malawian Society and he is a threat to society and it was also established that he has also been breaking into shops and offices in town. She prayed to the Court to impose a meaningful sentence on him to deter would-be offenders.
In mitigation, the minor asked for the Court’s leniency when passing a sentence to him because he is still young and a student.
In his sentence, First Grade Magistrate Robert Makayika expressed concern with the seriousness of the offense and sent him to Chirwa Reformatory Center.
The young offender hails from Hezekiya Nkhambule Village, Traditional Authority Kampingo Sibande in Mzimba District.
