Police in Nkhata Bay have arrested a 51-year-old Chinese national for allegedly harassing two girls sexually in the district.
Nkhata Bay Police Public Relations Officer Sergeant Kondwani James identified the Chinese national as Chen Shiliang of a construction company carrying out water project in the district China Civil Engineering Construction Cooperative (CCECC).
According to James, Shiliang has been arrested following complaints which the victims lodged to Nkhata Bay Police station.
James identified the victims as Nellie Rashid aged 24 of Michongwe Village, T/A Nkula in Machinga district and Benezia Kadango aged 26 of Kachule Village, T/A Kachere in Dedza district.
According to the Nkhata Bay Police Publicist, the victims who work with CCECC in cafeteria department reported that their boss, the chef (suspect) has been harassing them sexually by touching their breasts and behinds whilst cooking since May this month.
“We have arrested a Chinese national Chen Shiliang over allegations that he has been sexually abusing two girls who work in his department at CCECC,” said James.
James further said Shiliang never changed his behavior despite being reported to the company’s Human Resource Manager, a development which prompted the victims to lodge a complaint to Nkhata Bay Police Station. The suspect was arrested on 28 June, 2021.
“The arrest follows complaints that the victims lodged to us at Nkhata Bay Police Station So, we instituted investigations which have led us to arrest the suspect. The suspect has been charged with indecent assault which is contrary to section 137(1) of the penal code,” said James.
Shiliang will soon appear in court to answer the charges which have been leveled against him.
