Committee renovates head teacher’s house, office in Mulanje

A School Improvement Plan (SIP) committee has renovated a head teacher’s house and an office at Chikonde Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in Mulanje district. The committee has been able to do the renovations after undergoing a management training that Creative Centre for Community Mobilisation (CRECCOM) had organized under its Improving Education Quality in Community day Secondary Schools (IEQ-CDSS) project which is funded by Mastercard Foundation and Echidna Giving.  CRECCOM inculcated in the committee members sense of owning their school projects, and gave the committee a about K1.4 million for various school projects. One such project was to renovate Chikonde CDSS head teacher’s house which had cracks on its walls and the floor, and it used to leak during rainy season. The SIP committee used the knowledge and K700, 000 of the funds from CRECCOM to renovate the house which is now wearing a new face, to the delight of the head teacher. The renovated house Ruthness Kabango, SIP committee member who is also Chikonde CDSS Deputy Head teacher said they followed all processes to procure materials for the maintenance works. The committee also extended the renovation works to the head teacher’s officer at the Mulanje-based CDSS. Kabango said the renovated office will ease head teacher’s work at the school as well as staff meetings. The renovated office “For many years the head teacher was operating in a small office which made his work difficult. The situation was worse during staff meetings which used to take place in classrooms after students knocked off. We also struggled to accommodate visitors,” said Kabango. Kabango also said the renovations will help the school to secure books which are kept in the office. Just as the head teacher’s house, the committee used K700 000 from CRECCOM funds on the office project and also a sign post for their school. Sharing is Caring!
