Concerns rife over maize exports

There are fears that the country’s maize may face challenges to sell in other countries, following the set Farm gate prices which according to Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation Admarc are expensive.

Government through the ministry of Agriculture set 150 kwacha as price for Maize.

However, Admarc Acting Chief Executive Officer Dhlelisile Phiri said the price is expensive as compared with other countries in Africa.

“The farm gate prices for Malawi are a bit higher, Malawi had a bumper yield and the same is the case in our neighboring countries which is forcing the maize prices to go down, so our maize will find a challenge to sell in the neighboring countries because they will be priced highly,” said Phiri.

Phiri: the prices are expensive

Reacting to the development, Werani Chilenga Chairperson of the Natural resources committee has blamed the ministry of Agriculture for not doing a thorough consultation on the prices.

Government is expected to issue licenses to enterprises and individuals willing to sell the staple grain to other countries.
