Court nullifies Nkhata Bay Central election results

Supreme Court of Appeal in Blantyre has nullified 2019 Parliamentary election results for Nkhata Bay Central Constituency where Vuwa Kaunda was declared a winner. The nullification follows Peoples Party’s candidate during the elections Raphael Mhone’s appeal against Mzuzu High Court judgement which upheld Kaunda’s victory in the elections. Symon Vuwa Kaunda who has served different ministerial positions was declared a winner on Democratic Progressive Party ticket with 6 more votes. Mhone: challenged the results After Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) declared Kaunda as a winner, Mhone challenged Vuwa’s victory citing that there were irregularities. Mhone argued that some monitors were barred from signing result sheets and that votes in some centres were changed in Kaunda’s favour, a petition which Mzuzu High Court Judge Thomson Ligowe in 2019 threw away. The High Court ruling forced Mhone to take the issue to the Supreme Court of Appeal. With this ruling, it means MEC is expected to hold by elections in the constituency This is the third time for 2019 Parliamentary election results to be nullified following nullification of results from Mangochi North East, Mangochi West, Nsanje North, Chikwawa East and Nsanje Central.
