Deft Media group organizes poetry festival

Upcoming poets are set to rub shoulders with veteran poets in the country as Deft Media Group, -an independent record label and distribution company has organised a poetry festival to take place at the Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre on 30th July.

Speaking in an interview with Malawi News Agency (MANA), William Shumba; the organization’s events manager says the festival seeks to provide a platform for an exceptional conversation amongst poets in Malawi.

Shumba: We want to promote poetry in the country

“Our aim is to uplift poetry from both budding and legendary poets as the organization strives to promote the art of speaking English as our formal language and impact public speaking skills amongst students from primary and secondary schools,” he said.

Shumba added that the groups another commitment is to bridge the gap between poetry and music.

“The organisation discovered few loop holes which include a gap  between music and poetry, the organisation also noticed that poets are not are not fully embraced, as such, we hope to nurture talents and give meaning to these  talents by providing  financial support to young poets.” he said. 

According to Shumba, the group has aligned a considerable number of aspiring and legendary poets to perform at this years event.

Q Malewezi will perform live during the festival

Some of the prominent poets expected to perform at the festival are Sylvester Kalizangoma, Robert Chiwamba, Q Malewezi, Raphael Sitima and others.

“We have a bunch of poets that are expected to perform on this day and we are certain that it will be a great poetry event as great talent will converge at one place.” He said.

In a separate interview, Q Malewezi, a renowned poet expected to perform at the event, says he is prepared to perform his work at the event.

“It is always a wonderful feeling to step onto a stage and share my works with the audience for poerty.” 

“I am humbled by the organizers gesture and consideration; and, I am ready to perform some of my classics as well as my new works.
