Development committees advised consider planning for agriculture related projects

M’mbelwa District Council has urged Village and Area Development Committees to include agriculture related projects in their plans as the council prepares to formulate District Development Plan (DDP) which will run from 2022 to 2027.

Director of Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources for M’Mbelwa District Council, Ezra Mbendera said this Wednesday in Mzuzu during 2022 Agriculture Fair which was organized by Mzimba North Agriculture Office.

He said he made the call after noting that the Agriculture Sector in the district did not benefit anything from the previous DDP because it did not encompass agriculture related projects.

“Most agriculture development planned projects lacked funding because they were initially included in the previous DDP.  

We were supposed tap on resources made available to the district by various development partners, however, some good projects were not implemented due to lack of funds because they were outside the DDP,” Mbendera added.

The Director advised extension workers to work with Village and Area Development Committees in developing agriculture related projects plans that could be adopted in the DDP.

 Chairperson for the Agriculture Committee at M’Mbelwa District Council, Councilllor,  Muwuso Nkhoma said proper agriculture networks as key in the development of the district.

“As a council, 70 percent of our local revenue is generated from the agriculture sector, hence the need to urge local development structures in play a leading role in contributing agriculture related projects to DDP,” he said.

 Nkhoma encouraged farmers to migrate from subsistence agriculture to agribusiness and adopt new farming technologies to maximize their crop production.

The Agriculture Fair which will run from August 31 to September 2, 2022 was being held under the theme ‘Smallholder Commercialization: Key to Sustainable Development’.
