DIN Malawi dresses learners at Dyeratu

Development Initiative Network (DIN) Malawi has embarked on an initiative aimed at distributing shoes and school uniforms to vulnerable children in Chikwawa district. Through the initiative called ‘Uniform Dress Up’, DNI Malawi aims to protect school going children in the district from heat and germs. The initiative on Wednesday 14th April 2021 distributed  school uniforms and pairs of shoes to 39 vulnerable learners who were not attending classes due to lack of school uniforms and shoes at Dyeratu Primary School in the district. DIN Executive Director Anderson Billiat told Nthanda Times that they donated the items in the area after establishing that many children fail to attend education at Dyeratu. Some of beneficiaries at Dyeratu Primary School “We established that lack of school uniforms was challenge in the area as many learners were sent back home for not wearing school uniforms and some complaining of suffering from strange diseases as they walk bear footed. This why we have embarked on this initiative so as to rescue them from these challenges,” said Billiat. Billiat also said they will reach to all public primary schools in Chikwawa district with the initiative to promote quality education and end early marriages as many girls drop out of school. Receiving his school uniform and a pair of shoes Chikondi Banda who is in standard 3 at the school thanked DIM Malawi for the donation saying this will now help them attend classes without being sent back home by teachers for not wearing school uniforms. In an interview with Nthanda Times, Dyeratu Primary School Head teacher Tsoka Banda thanked DIN Malawi for such a great initiative to take place at his school. Banda said the donation has come in time as they were registering low enrollment and high absenteeism and dropout rates due to the challenge of lack of school uniforms and school shoes. “Many learners were not attending classes and this contributed to registering low enrollment, class attendances and high school dropouts. Now with the support, we hope it will register high enrollment,” Tsoka explained.
