Dodma distributes relief items in Karonga
The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) Tuesday distributed assorted relief items to over 300 households who were affected by heavy rainstorms in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Mwakaboko in Karonga District.
Deputy Director for Disaster Response at Dodma, Fyawupi Mwafongo said the department was mandated to implement disaster risk management programs including disaster response to relieve survivors of different forms of disasters.
“Let me ask the people across the country to keep on listening and taking heed to early weather warning messages that are disseminated in collaboration with the Department of Climate Change and Metrological Services.
Apart from that, let them avoid cultivating along the river banks and refrain from wanton cutting down of trees as the malpractice leads soil degradation resulting into rivers’ siltation that causes frequent flash floods,” he said
Mwafongo said the Dodma was currently revising its policies whereby those who resist relocating to the upland from flood-prone areas in the future face stiff penalties.
Village Head Mwandenga hailed Dodma for the support which she described as timely when the disaster survivors needed it most
“We are very grateful for the support. We believe the assistance will help the affected households to maintain and rebuild their houses that were damaged by the floods so that the survivors will live a normal life again,” she said.
One of the beneficiaries, Leonard Nyondo thanked Dodma for the gesture and asked other well-wishers to emulate the organization’s gesture.
The items included 50kg bags of maize, plastic pails, cups, plates, tablets of soap, and plastic sheets.
