DPP reacts to arrest of its 3 senior members
The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) says it is anxiously waiting to hear charges that will be levelled against its three top officials who have been arrested by police.
1 Police Public Relations Officer James Kadadzera on Wednesday confirmed the arrest of three DPP top officials namely former Minister of Finance Joseph Mwanamveka, former Reserve Bank of Malawi Governor Dalitso Kabambe, and Thyolo Central legislator Ben Phiri.
Through a press statement, DPP’s Spokesperson Shadreck Namalomba said the party was shocked by the arrest of its three senior party members.
According to Namalomba, DPP does not believe that the arrests are politically motivated aimed at silencing the opposition.
“If they are, then it’s yet another sad day in the history of this nation. The arrests remind us of the dictatorship dark ages of the Malawi Congress Party rule,” said Namalomba.
The DPP Spokesperson further said the party will make its position known soon.
Kadadzera revealed through a press statement that Mwanamveka and Kabambe are being held on suspicion of committing an offence of abuse of office and procuring the commission of an offence of fraudulent false accounting, while Phiri has been arrested for being a registered owner of Beata Investments, which is embroidered in some procurement fraud and corruption scandal at the Ministry of Gender between 2018 and 2020.
