Dzaleka communities warned against playing along water bodies

Dedza, October 6, Mana: Police in Dowa have issued a warning to the communities of Dzaleka refugee camp to refrain from playing along water bodies following the death of a 15-year-old boy, Elakoni Efred who drowned in Chaliwa Dam where he went for swimming.

The incident according to Dowa Police Station Public Relations Officer (PRO), Sub-Inspector Gladson M’bumpha happened in the afternoon of October 2 2021, at Mtanda Village within the camp.

He said that the deceased went with his friends to swim at the Chaliwa Dam situated in the Mtanda Village within the camp where he drowned.

The matter was reported to Dzaleka Police Unit where Police officers accompanied by medical personnel visited the scene. 

The post mortem conducted by Dzaleka Health Centre personnel revealed that the death was due to suffocation secondary to drowning.

Meanwhile Police are strongly cautioning the communities around Dzaleka Refugee camp and other areas and other areas to refrain from playing along water bodies to avoid such deaths caused by drowning  

The deceased hailed from Kanyuchi Province in Burundi.
