FEDOMA calls for user friendly infrastructure in Karonga

Karonga district council has raised entrance level of gates into Karonga market as we fast approach the rainy season, a situation that has made the infrastructure user unfriendly to people with walking challenges.

In an interview with Nthanda Times, Chairperson for Federation of Disabilities in Malawi (FEDOMA) Karonga chapter, Noah Simwaka, described the development as bad and unfortunate.

“Infrastructure must be user friendly to all persons regardless of his or her disabilities. This we have talked for a long time and we do not know why they deliberately do the contrary yet it is our right to access these public places.

Simwaka: the entrance is not user friendly

“We who have challenges will not always be escorted, so with such infrastructures, it will be hard to access the market, this is bad and we cannot smile at it. So something must be done,” he said.

Efforts to talk to the Director of Planning and Development for Karonga District, David Gondwe, did not yield any fruits as he turned unfriendly for the reporter to hear his side of the story.

Karonga market has three main entrances where only one side is user friendly while the other sides are not user friendly and when congested, it can be a big challenge for those disabled.
