Government reviewing National Agriculture policy

Government is keen to review National Agriculture Policy to align it to long term development strategy Malawi 2063. 

Minister of Agriculture, Lobin Lowe said this Wednesday during launch of 2022 Malawi Agribusiness Deal Room at Sunbird Capital Hotel in Lilongwe. 

He said the review would enable Ministry to process of development of Fertilizer Bill and the Crops Bill which was the amalgamation of the Special Crops Act and General Purposes Act. 

“I understand the concerns that some of our private partners have raised on the Crops Bill, I would like to reassure our esteemed private sector partners that your concerns are being looked into and they will be addressed,” Lowe assured.   

The Minister added the Ministry has embarked on the ambitious Affordable Inputs Programme (AIP) which was already reaping the fruits giving our smallholder farmers access to the much needed inputs for increased productivity. 

He said Ministry has realized it cannot do everything alone hence the need to other players. 

“This year, the programme faces a huge challenge emanating from the global crisis as a result of Russia-Ukraine War,” Lowe pointed out

He said they would rely on all of you partners as well as other development partners to complement our efforts and going beyond to support us whether technically or financially to ensure realization of a sustainable food secure nation that exports and feeds the manufacturing industry.

Lowe said the expectation of Ministry would fruitful engagements which would unlock strategic partnerships that would lead to investment flows. 

The Minister assured the private sector of government’s commitment to supporting them and creating a conducive environment.

National Planning Commission (NPC) Director of Planning, Dr Grace Kumchulesi said there was concern of child labour related issues in the tobacco industry there was need for the country to diversity its agriculture sector.

She said the agriculture sector need a huge jump start for the nation to graduate into a middle income country with the private sector play a pivotal role in the agriculture diversification process.
