Govt seeks public opinion on reforms

As the fight against abuse of public funds takes a center stage, Public Service Systems Review Taskforce has intreated the general public to take part in revamping the Civil Service.

The taskforce which falls under Economic Planning and Public Sector Reforms ministry has requested the citizenry to submit their comments, views and proposals for the review of the three Government Systems of Allowances, Procurement and Employment Contracts.

The taskforce held its first meeting on 25th February barely a week after its launch as directed by State President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera on 14th February 2021.

In an interview with NewsDay Malawi, Public Sector Reforms Public Relations Officer McCathy Mwalwimba said the process of reforming the public service needs a consented effort.

According to Mwalwimba, the public views will help the taskforce to come up with measures and initiatives to curb system of abusing funds from public coffers.

Chilima : heads the taskforce

“The public service is for Malawians. Public servants are there to save Malawians, so despite that the Head of State Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and his Vice Dr. Saulos Chilima instituted a taskforce to work on reviewing the Public Service, the taskforce itself values the input of every Malawian citizen. That is why it has decided to call upon Malawians on what needs to be done as far as the government systems are concerned so that as a country, we should curb the system of abusing public funds,” said Mwalwimba.

Mwalwimba also clarified that the public contributions should be categorized in 5 areas namely System of Allowances, System of Procurement, System of Employment Contracts, Conditions of Service, and Restructuring of the Public Service.

The taskforce according to Malimba will stop receiving the views and proposals on 21st March after which meetings with different stakeholder groups depending on the specific task at hand will be organized.

People are supposed to send their views via the taskforce’s email address, Facebook Page, WhatsApp text messages, and its Twitter handle.
