Illegal vending worries MCC

Mzuzu September 9: The Mzuzu City Council (MCC) has expressed concern over the continued tendency by some vendors to sell their merchandise in undesignated street locations despite years of the council’s efforts in relocating them.

For close to five years now, MCC has been in on and off streets fights with the vendors over removing them in the city’s streets.

In an interview on Wednesday, MCC Public Relations Officer, Mcdonald Gondwe said it is irritating seeing the vendors continued stay on Mzuzu’s streets.

“They are being relocated but they are resisting. During peak hours it is very risky to road users as they create unnecessary pressure contributing to rampant road accidents,” he said.

One of the concerned citizens in Mzuzu, Steven Mhango said illegal vending is also contributing to overcrowding in the city's roads.

However, Vanessa Yotamu who sells assorted merchandise close to Shoprite said she finds undesignated places more vibrant because of large numbers of people that pass by.
