Lack of entertainment venues worry Mzuzu artists
Mzuzu, September 9, Mana: Musicians in Mzuzu have expressed concern over inadequate entertainment venues in the city a situation which has caused hiring costs for the same exorbitant.
In an interview with Malawi News Agency (MANA), one of the city’s artists Wakisa James said the development negatively affects their career development.
“Mzuzu has few entertainment places compared to other cities like Lilongwe and Blantyre. This has been a challenge to us as musicians for we do not gain more profits when we have organized shows.
“We also face challenges since most places are located far from the city’s premises making it hard for our fans to attend. This in turn leads us not to make enough money. This has been the reason why we see some artists relocating to other regions,” James said.
Another musician, Illbest (real name Victor Nkhambule) complained that apart from inadequate venues, people in the city do not patronize their shows.
"When organizers come up with an event they do not make enough money which forces them to give us peanuts hence retarding our careers,” he said.
One of the entertainment promoters Mwayi Kumwenda, who works with Top City Entertainment says the issue of venues and low patronage is really affecting artists.
“Artists do not earn enough money even us as promoters because most venues are expensive since they are few. I would, therefore, say that such places are needed to be constructed in Mzuzu just like other areas across Malawi," said Kumwenda.
