Machinga, September 23, Mana: Liwonde Police in Machinga have recovered a Toyota Sienta motor vehicle registration number BL 7843 the midnight of Tuesday, September 21, 2021.
Deputy Machinga Police Station Public Relations Officer, Ngwashape Msume said police officers were following a report that criminals had stolen a motor vehicle in Blantyre.
“It was reported to us that one, Harry Mkwezalamba aged 32 hired a Sienta motor vehicle from Liwonde to move around Blantyre.
“They stopped at Kips Restaurant where the suspect booked food for the driver and later asked the driver to give him car keys to collect his phone in the car,” she said.
Msume said the driver gave the keys to the suspect who left the place with the car leaving the driver eating at the restaurant.
She said the taxi driver after some minutes went out of the restaurant to check on the suspect, adding: “He then realised that his car was missing and then he reported the matter to police.”
Msume said during the night of September 21, 2021, police officers from Liwonde whilst on routine patrols came across a car along Liwonde – Ntanja Road and the vehicle was immediately recovered.
She also said the suspect is in police custody at Liwonde waiting to appear before the court.
“He is expected to be charged with the offense of theft of motor vehicle contrary to section 282 (1) of the penal code,” Msume added.
Mkwezalamba hails from Sileti Village in Traditional Authority Kanduku in Mwanza district.
