Lunji to be laid to rest Wednesday afternoon

The office of the Speaker of the Parliament says the body of late Martha Lunji Chanjo Mhone, who was member of Parliament for Nkhotakota North East Constituency, will be laid to rest this afternoon at her home village, Matelezi, in Senior Chief Kanyenda's area in Nkhotakota District.

Parliament's Principal Public Relations Officer Suzgo Khunga has disclosed in an interview.

Kunga also said the departed lawmaker who was also the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chief Whip in Parliament died last night at Kamuzu Central Hospital Covid-19 isolation unit.

Lunji: succumbed to Covid-19

In a condolence message, DPP says late Lunji fought against selective justice in the country.

DPP says Lunji will be remembered as a transparent and accountable woman who always wished a better Malawi for all.

"As a member of parliament, she stood with DPP and it's leadership both when it was in government and opposition. Madame Lunji joined the DPP because she was inspired with its governance and economic policies," reads the condolence message.

Also sending her condolence message, PAC Chairperson Joyce Chitsulo reminded the citizenry that Covid-19 is real.

Lunji Muhone was also serving as a member of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and the Media Committee of Parliament. She also served as Minister of Labour, Skills and Innovation during the Peter Mutharika administration.

Meanwhile, DPP has described Lunji as a law marker who fought for the betterment of the country.

Lunji is survived by a daughter.
