Macra confiscates Fast Networks equipment for illegal operations

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) has confiscated equipment for Fast Networks Limited for allegedly illegally operating an inter1 gateway fibre link to provide internet services.

Macra through a press statement which has been issued through the regulatory body's Director General Office says the illegal provision of internet services is contrary to Communications Act of 2016.

“The illegal provision of internet services by Fast Network Limited is contrary to the Communications Act of 2016, section 31, subsection 1, which states that a person shall not provide electronic communications services except in accordance with a licence issued by Macra,” the regulator says.

According to Macra, two directors of the firm have also been arrested and are expected to appear before court.

Macra further states that whoever wants to provide regulated information and communication technology services should first acquire a relevant licence.

It further warns that, among others, providing broadcasting, postal and courier services without a licence is a crime.
