Man commits suicide in Dowa over relish
A 68-year-old man in Dowa has committed suicide following a quarrel he picked with his daughter.
The man has been identified as George Chibweza.
Speaking to Nthanda Times, Dowa Police Public Relations Officer Sergeant Gladson M'bumpha said the incident occurred on 19 April 2022 at Chileka Village, Traditional Authority Chiwere in the district.
According to M'bumpha, Chibweza quarreled with his daughter because she cooked relish without tomatoes, a development which did not go well with the father who later went to his garden and never returned.
"Earlier that day before terminating his life, Chibweza picked a quarrel with his daughter because she prepared relish without tomatoes. After that Chibweza left the house and was seen by his sister-in-law going towards his garden and did not report back home which prompted his son to start searching for him," said M'bumpha.
M'bumpha added that the son was told that his father was in the garden hoping that he was guarding his sugarcane against thieves.
After noting that the father is not returning from his garden, the son went to the garden in search of his father where he found him hanging in a mango tree.
Postmortem results conducted at Dowa District Hospital showed that Chibweza died of suffocation secondary to strangulation.
"The matter was reported to police, who visited the scene and took the dead body to Dowa District Hospital. Postmortem conducted at the said hospital established that death was due to suffocation secondary to strangulation," said M'bumpha.
Police have meanwhile advised people to seek advice from relevant authorities instead of committing suicide.
Chibweza hailed from Chileka Village in Traditional Authority Chiwere in Dowa District.
