Man fined for failing to comply with government farm gate prices

A 26-year-old man in Dowa District has been convicted and sentenced to pay a fine of K60, 000.00 or in default serve 6 months imprisonment with hard labour for failing to comply with government farm gate prices.

The court through state prosecutor Sub Inspector Agnes Mphinga heard that the convict Limbikani Gama on June 15 2021 at Nalunga Trading Centre in Dowa District was found buying maize at K80.00 per kilogram contrary to government’s set up price on farm gate prices.

Appearing before court, the convict pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to comply with government prices on buying farm produce.

Passing sentence, First Grade Magistrate Amran Phiri ordered the convict to pay a fine of K60, 000.00 or in default serve 6 months imprisonment with hard labour.

The convict has since paid the fine.

Limbikani Gama comes from Chinkhadze Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chiwere in Dowa District.

In a related development, the same court has convicted and sentenced a 31-year-old driver, Bellingstone Kalambule, to pay a fine of K200, 000.00 or in default serve 8 months imprisonment with hard labour for causing death by reckless driving contrary to Section 126 of the Road Traffic Act.

The court through state prosecutor Inspector Christopher Daluni heard that the driver, Bellingstone Kalambule, on June 11 2021 at Mwambula Village in the district of Dowa was driving a motor vehicle registration number BZ 8761 and upon arrival at the village he hit a pillion passenger, Eunice Magombo aged 31, who was pronounced dead upon arrival at Salima District Hospital.

Appearing before court, the driver pleaded guilty to a charge of causing death by reckless driving.

Passing sentence, First Grade Magistrate Amran Phiri ordered the driver to pay a fine of K200, 000.00 or in default serve 8 months imprisonment with hard labour and if paid, K150, 000.00 to be given to the bereaved family as compensation.

The driver has since paid the fine.

Bellingstone Kalambule comes from Nthiwathiwa Village in the area of Traditional Authority Kalonga in Salima District
