A 27-year-old man in Dowa has been convicted and sentenced to pay a fine of K100 000.00 or in default serve 4 months imprisonment with hard labour for being found in possession of forest produce without a licence.
The Dowa First Grade Magistrate’s Court on Friday, July 30 2021, through state prosecutor Sub Inspector Benedict Mathambo heard that the convict Swarley Chimombo, was arrested on June 25 2021 at Mvera Roadblock in Dowa District while in possession of forest produce especially round wood without a licence.
Appearing before court, the convict pleaded guilty to a charge of being found in possession of forest produce (round wood) without a licence.
In his ruling, First Grade Magistrate Amran Phiri concurred with the state’s submission for a stiff punishment and sentenced the convict to pay a fine of K100 000.00 or in default serve 4 months imprisonment with hard labour as a deterrent to others with similar intentions.
The convict has since paid the fine while the round wood have been forfeited to Malawi Government and to be shared by Dowa District Hospital and Bzyazi Reformatory Centre in Dowa and the motor vehicle has been returned to the owner. The convict, Swarley Chimombo, comes from Bango Village in the area of Traditional Authority Tsabango in Lilongwe District
