The Dowa First Grade Magistrate’s Court sitting at Msongandeu Court on Thursday June 24 2021 convicted and sentenced a 32-year-old man, Gift Magula Phiri, to pay a fine of K100,000.00 or in default serve 12 months imprisonment with hard labour for being found in possession of forest produce.
The court through state prosecutor Sergeant Regina Namakhwa Nyirenda heard that the convict on June 22 2021 at Mvera Roadblock in the district of Dowa was found in possession of 20 bags of charcoal in a motor vehicle registration number CP 6286 Toyota Vannet without a permit.
Appearing before court, the convict pleaded guilty to a charge of being found in possession of forest produce without a permit contrary to Section 68 of the Forest Act.
Passing sentence, First Grade Magistrate Amran Phiri concurred with the state’s submission for a stiff punishment to send as a warning to other would-be offenders hence sentenced him to pay a fine of K100,000.00 or in default serve 12 months imprisonment with hard labour while charcoal has been forfeited to the Malawi Government and the motor vehicle has been returned to the owner.
