Man fined for trafficking forest produce without permit in Dowa

The Dowa First Grade Magistrate’s Court has convicted and sentenced a 36-year-old man to pay a fine of K150, 000.00 or in default serve 6 months imprisonment with hard labour for trafficking in forest produce without a permit.

The court through state prosecutor Inspector Christopher Daluni heard that the convict, Chikumbutso Daitoni, on July 3 2021 at Blantyre Location within Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa District was found trafficking 27 bags of charcoal on a motor vehicle registration number RU 4968 Nissan Carvan minibus without a permit.

Appearing before court, the convict pleaded guilty to a charge of trafficking in forest produce without a permit contrary to Section 68 of the newly ammended Forest Act.

Passing judgement, First Grade Magistrate Amran Phiri concurred with the state’s submission for a stiff punishment hence sentenced the convict to pay a fine of K150,000.00 or in default serve 6 months imprisonment with hard labour.

The convict has since paid the fine.

Chikumbutso Daitoni comes from Moleni Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chikowi in Zomba District.

In a related development, the same court has convicted and sentenced 63-year-old man, Chandawira Jimu, of Gawamadzi Hoya in the area of Traditional Authority Mkukula in Dowa District, to pay a fine of K15,000.00 or in default serve 4 months imprisonment with hard labour for the offence of unlawful wounding contrary to Section 241 of the Penal Code.

The court through state prosecutor Sergeant Joseph Banda heard that the convict, Chandawira Jimu, on July 3 2021 at Gawamadzi Hoya Village in the district of Dowa unlawfully wounded Nangozo Mbondo aged 59, of Sadalaki Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mkukula in Dowa District.
