Man gets 13 years for burglary and theft

Mzuzu, October 6, Mana: Mzuzu Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court has sentenced Kennedy Nyirongo, 26, to 10 and 3 years for burglary and theft in contrast with sections 309 and 278 of the Penal Code respectively.

State prosecutor Sub-inspector Alex Bwanausi told the court that Nyirongo stole a 55-inch Samsung Plasma, an amplifier, 50 plates and other items, all valued at K3.5 million between the months of April and September this year.

He said the items were stolen at Kaning’ina Location in Mzuzu at Joyson Mataka’s residence, where Nyirongo worked as a garden boy for three years.

“Nyirongo mistakenly sent an audio clip to the victim’s child which contained information about a stolen item which he was selling to his counterpart,” Bwanausi said.

Nyirongo pleaded guilty to the charges which led to his eventual conviction.

He, however, denied having stolen some of the mentioned items which were all amounting to K6 million but rather admitted to only having stolen items amounting to K3.5 million.

In his ruling, Senior Resident Magistrate Godfrey Nyirenda agreed with the state prosecutor that Nyirongo had breached employer’s trust, therefore, handed him a custodial sentence to deter would-be offenders.

In mitigation, the accused requested for leniency, saying he was first offender.

Nyirongo hails from Tiyezge Village in Traditional Authority (T.A) Mabilabo, Mzimba.
