The Dowa First Grade Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, June 24 2021 convicted and sentenced a 29-year-old man, Pilirani Maganizo, to 42 months imprisonment with hard labour for house breaking and theft.
The court through state prosecutor Sergeant Joseph Banda heard that the convict, Pilirani Maganizo, on March 21 2021 at Chankhungu Trading Centre in the district of Dowa broke and entered into the house of Stephano Malambilo and stole three blankets valued at K80, 000.00 belonging to Stephano Malambilo.
Appearing before court, the convict pleaded not guilty to charges of house breaking and theft contrary to Sections 309 and 278 respectively. This prompted the state to parade three witnesses leading to his conviction.
Passing sentence, First Grade Magistrate Amran Phiri concurred with the state’s submission and sentenced the convict to 42 months imprisonment with hard labour for the first count of house breaking and second count of theft has earned him 10 months imprisonment with hard labour.
The sentences will run concurrently.
Pilirani Maganizo comes from Kalinda Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chiwere in Dowa District.
In a related development, the same court has convicted and sentenced Bauleni Wyford aged 23 of Kasambwe Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chiwere in Dowa District to pay a fine of K230, 000.00 or in default serve 8 months imprisonment with hard labour for theft by servant contrary to Section 286 of the Penal Code.
State prosecutor Sub Inspector Ezara Bakili told the court that the convict was employed by Chakonda Lemison Mg’ona to be buying him soya beans and in the process, he misappropriated K213, 000.00 and failed to account for it./
