Government has deployed the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers to all the borders of the country to ensure easy entry of tankers bringing fuel in the country, Minister of Information Gospel Kazako announces.
Kazako was speaking at a press briefing in Lilongwe where he expressed Government’s surprise that the fuel tanker drivers have decided to go despite Government settling all their grievances in their favour.
The Minister said the Government ordered the employers to pay drivers K140,000 way above the minimum wage which is K50, 000.
He also said the Government through the Ministry of Health ordered that international truck drivers should no longer pay K30, 000 as a fee for the COVID-19 test.
“We mediated these and other conditions in their favour and the list is endless,” he said.
Kazako added that the Government will ensure that all eligible Malawians are awarded contracts highlighted in the Super Five agenda ‘Prospering Together’.
Kazako also said that the 30 thousand Kwacha that the drivers used to pay for Covid certificate when traveling outside was scrapped off in a quest to assist them.
He added that on passport, government reduced the fee by 50% and also removed fees when drivers are upgrading licenses.Kazako has since said the move by the drivers is not in the interest of Malawians.
The minister insists the government will not stop drivers from holding demonstrations but expects them not to break the law.
