More men reporting GBV in Zomba – Police

Zomba, November 17, Mana: Zomba Police Station Public Relations Officer, Patricia Sipiliano has revealed that more men are reporting gender based violence (GBV) to police than was the case before.

According to statistics from the police, about 45 men have this year alone reported GBV related cases compared to last year’s 16 cases.

Speaking in an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana) on Wednesday, Sipiliano said a lot of men were coming forward and speak out about abuses they are going through in their marriages, describing it as a positive step towards fighting GBV.

She said from the statistics, a lot of men were subjected to physical assault from their wives and that most of them were sent packing from their marriages soon after they harvested or built a house, calling the behaviour as barbaric which puts their life in danger.

“As police, we consider this a positive step towards eradicating GBV. It is obvious that a lot of men out there are suffering in silence and our message is clear; they should come forward and report their issue,” said Sipiliano.

She added that GBV is not for women and children only men also suffer different types of abuse but they are ashamed to report, encouraging men to stand up and speak out the abuses they were facing to the victim support unit.

Gender Officer for Zomba District Council, Ruperth Kansendelo said his office has planned a number of activities among which is to raise public awareness on the need for both men and women to report GBV cases.

“It is our hope that by men reporting GBV cases, we should be able to reduce GBV cases,” he said.

Senior Chief Malemia said just like women, men are also victims of GBV and they must report to relevant authorities.

Malemia said the increasing numbers of men reporting GBV was a good progress in as far as fighting GBV in the country is concerned, pledging to strengthen community by-laws with the aim of reducing cases of GBV in his area.
