MRA pounces on Mapeto officials

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has arrested five officials from Mapeto David White Head and Sons (DWSM) Limited for allegedly defrauding MK10.8 billion Malawi Government tax.

The officials include Faizal Gaffar Latif (Director), Mohamed Gaffar (Managing Director), Abdul Rashid Bakali (Financial Controller), Yaseen Muhammad (Procurement Manager) and Martin Chapasi Mpata (General Manager).

Confirming the development, MRA Head of Corporate Affairs Steve Kapoloma said the arrests follow a six-week-long examination of documents seized at Mapeto business premises following a tip from the public.

According to Kapoloma, the tax collecting body obtained a search warrant and managed to apprehend four officials from the company on Friday, May 21, 2021, and on Sunday, May 23, 2021, the director for the company, Faizal Gaffar Latif handed himself to Msonkho House.

‘’The Malawi Revenue Authority has been examining documents which were seized at the business premises of Mapeto (DWSM) Limited for six weeks. The offenses committed are contrary to the Customs and Excise Act provisions, Taxation Act, and Value Added Tax,’’ said Kapoloma.

Kapoloma further said the company was under-declaring sales and income tax, under-declaring Pay as You Earn tax on its expatriate workers and declaring finished fabrics as raw materials, and under declaring some raw materials.

The accused are being represented by lawyer Jai Banda.

The suspects are currently being kept at Blantyre Police Station waiting for court proceedings.
