Lilongwe, September 29, Mana: Renowned chess gem, who is also the country’s top-ranked player, Fide Master (FM) Joseph Mwale, is this weekend in a joint birthday celebration chess tournament with his elder brother Candidate Master (CM) George Mwale who were born on 1 October and 16 September respectively.
The On the Board Tournament (OTB) has been slated for 2 and 3 October at the Kamuzu Institute for Sports and is being hosted by the Mwale Chess Academy, of whom the two brothers are co-founding coaches.
“All students of the academy will participate free without paying the registration fee,” explained FM Mwale who further disclosed that the registration fee has been pegged at a minimum of K2000.
The distribution of prizes will be announced later.
The initiative has attracted sponsorship from the country’s chess veterans and enthusiasts, among them Paul Nyirenda, Mpilo Mizere and Vitumbiko Ndovi.
Among players already registered for the tournament, which will also be International Chess Federation (FIDE) rated, are Malawi’s chess elites like FM Gerald Mphungu, CM Petros Mfune, Khama Chindole and Davie Mawango.
“I am ready to give out my best performance and prove that my Candidate Master title was deservedly earned,” explained CM Mfune adding “I hope the initiative will make the Mwale Academy more visible to attract more players to enroll.”
The tournament will comprise two sections: the Open and the Ladies/Juniors sections.
