Public Works Programme to Conserve Environment in Dedza
The 1 Local Government Finance Committee (NLGFC) has appealed to political and traditional leaders in Dedza District to ensure successful implementation of the climate Smart Public Works Programme (CSPWP) to improve the livelihoods of people and conserve the environment.
Speaking on Friday during a full council briefing, NLGFC member, Ina Thombozi, said the benefits that the program offers to community members mostly in micro catchment areas could bring socio-economic transformation in the district.
“CSPWP comes with it an important path for employment, income transfers to poor households, and breaking food insecurity by enhancing natural resources management and safety needs interventions.
"That is why as duty bearers you are required to play your roles effectively by creating an enabling environment for the smooth operation of the program," she said.
She, therefore, called upon the local leaders to ensure the successful implementation of the program so that communities could benefit from what it has to offer.
Dedza District Council Chairperson, Isaac Ziyaya, commended the government for introducing the program to the district, saying it has the capacity of improving the living standards of people in local areas.
"As a district, we are happy with the coming of this program because it will provide employment for many people who will now be able to support their families with food and other basic needs," he said, adding that it will also address some of the environmental challenges the district is facing.
The program is expected to start by July 2022 and will end in April 2023. It will also be implemented in Balaka, Dowa, Karonga, Rumphi, Kasungu, Nkhotakota, Lilongwe, Phalombe, and Blantyre.
