Security concerns prompt refs to cease offering services at Karonga Stadium

The Northern Region Referees Committee has resolved not to providing any referees for any Super League match at Karonga Stadium.

This follows the incident that marred super league match between Karonga United and Silver Strikers at the venue, where officiating personnel, Mercy Kayira, Samuel Fudzulani, Harrison Simbeye and Stammy Msukwa were beaten.

The coaster for Silver Strikers was equally damaged.

"The Regional Referees Committee had a meeting with Referees where the resolution was made that there is no security (safety) of match officials in most of the games the latest being mentioned herein.

"We are hereby informing you that with immediate effect no Referee will officiate a TNM Super League match at Karonga Stadium from the Northern Region Referees Committee until your office address issues to do with safety of Referees, if the situation continue the way it is now we are going to lose one of our members due to security," reads the letter addressed to Super League of Malawi (Sulom) and signed by the Committee's Chairperson, Mischek Juba and his General Secretary, Clemence Kanduku.

The letter has also been copied to Central Region Referees Committee, Southern Region Referees Committee, Assessors (North) and Sulom Representative (North).
