Malawian female athlete who also doubles as 1 team football player Asimenye Simwaka who is 400 meters and 200 meters runner has won two gold medals on Sunday at the Olympic Qualifying Games in Cameron.
Despite Simwaka failing to qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games with 46 milliseconds in 200 meters and 1 second 22 milliseconds in 400 meters on Saturday, she scoped position one in 200m and 400m winning two gold medals.
In an interview on Sunday, Simwaka said she was not happy because she has failed to qualify for Olympics.
“I hope I can have one more chance. I have not given up hope yet, I will remain positive. Otherwise, the solace is that I won gold twice which was not an easy feat considering that I was competing with the best on the continent,” she said.
The win in 200 meters, Simwaka run with a time of 23.74 beating her old best time of 23.74 and she has also broken her 400 meters record after running in a time of 52.57 surpassing her old record time of 52.59.
Reacting to the news, Jappie Mhango who is Malawi Olympic Committee president said Simwaka has a bright future.
“If she won’t qualify for Olympics, then she will definitely make it to Commonwealth Games. I have no doubt about that,” he said.
Simwaka missed qualification for the Olympics by 46 milliseconds.
