Machinga, October 13, Mana: Government has assured farmers in the country that they will access the fertilizer at a reasonable price.
Minister of Agriculture Lobin Lowe made the assurance Tuesday when Liwonde Fertilizer Terminal of Malawi Fertilizer Company was being inaugurated by State President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera.
Lowe said government will ensure that the price of fertilizer is reasonable for every Malawian to access it from all suppliers to ensure food security is maintained in the country.
“Every fertilizer supplier will be mandated to sign a contract or an agreement with government on prices for the people to access it,” said Lowe.
He further said government has the responsibility of protecting smallholder farmers from the recent increase of fertilizer saying K40, 000 per 50 kilograms bag was a joke of the season for the Malawians.
“Government will not tolerate any unnecessary pressure by the fertilizer suppliers to sell fertilizer at a very higher price,” warned Lowe.
Speaking during the commissioning, Malawi Fertilizer Company Chief Executive Officer Christos Giannakis said their company supports government to ensure that smallholder farmers afford a bag of fertilizer.
Giannakis showered praise to the current government for supporting private sectors and local industries as it is a major buyer for farm inputs in the country.
Malawi Fertilizer Company is said to be the leading blending and supplier of fertilizer solutions in Malawi which is contributing to sustainable food surpluses within the SADC/COMESA regions.
The company plant is strategically located in Liwonde, in the Southern region of Malawi, on the rail line linking it to the Port of Nacala in Mozambique.
The terminal has been constructed by Malawi Fertilizer Company and it has the storage capacity of 40,000 metric tonnes of fertilizer and the capacity to blend 2,400 metric tonnes of fertilizer per day.
