Taskforce to reform Civil Service formed

As one way of reviewing the Civil Service, a 15 member Civil Service Comprehensive Review Taskforce has been formed. This follows State President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera’s directive to Vice president Dr. Saulos Chilima to form and lead a special taskforce with an aim of reforming the civil service. Through a press statement, Press Officer of the Vice President Pilirani Phiri says the taskforce has been formed to review the three Government systems of Allowances, Procurement, and Employment Contracts. The taskforce according to the communique will be chaired by the Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima who is also Minister responsible for Economic Planning & Development and Public Sector Reforms. According to Phiri, the taskforce which will submit its recommendations to Dr. Chakwera within 3 months will hold its first meeting on 25th February 2021. “The taskforce will hold its first meeting on Thursday, 25th February, 2021 to agree on the modus operandi including an action plan with clear timelines. Thereafter, the task team will ensure that the public is regularly engaged and that the taskforce is held accountable by both His Excellency the President and the people of Malawi”, reads the statement. The taskforce will be supported by a team of technocrats within the civil service from the Office of the President and Cabinet, Public Sector Reforms, Ministry of Justice, and Ministry of Finance, among others. Other members of the taskforce include Prof. Ronald Mangani, Prof. Nyovani Madise, Prof. Ngeyi Kanyongolo, Prof. Wiseman Chijere Chirwa, Dr. Aubrey Mvula, Dr. Henry Chingaipe, Mr. Steve Matenje SC, Mr. Waki Mushani, Mr. John Suzi Banda, Rev. Elsie Tembo, Ms. Tione Chilambe, Mrs. Zunzo Mitole, Ms. Nwazi Mnthambala, and Ms. Jane Kambalame During a 1 address on the fight against Covid-19 on 14th February, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera directed reformation of the civil service amid public cry over looting from the public coffers by civil servants.
