Three convicted for possessing forest produce in Dowa

Three people in Dowa have been convicted and sentenced to pay fines for being found in possession of forest produce without licenses.

The Dowa First Grade Magistrate’s Court sitting at Msongandeu Court through state prosecutor Sub Inspector Benedict Mathambo heard that the first convict Pilirani Kathyole aged 28, was arrested after being found in possession of 80 bags of charcoal, while the second convict Blessings Malamba aged 47, was arrested after being found in possession of 18 bags of charcoal and the third convict Juma Saizi aged 25, was found in possession of 7 bags of charcoal.

Appearing before the court, all the three accused persons pleaded guilty to charges of being found in possession of forest produce without licenses.

In his submission, state prosecutor Sub Inspector Benedict Mathambo asked the court to pass a stiff punishment to the offenders as one way of conserving natural resources.

Passing sentence, First Grade Magistrate Amran quashed the mitigation factors presented by the convicts of being breadwinners and ordered the first convict Pilirani Kathyole to pay a fine of K200 000.00 or in default serve 4 months IHL, the second convict Blessings Malamba to pay a fine of K200 000.00 or in default serve 4 months IHL while the third convict Juma Saizi has been ordered to pay a fine of K150 000.00 or in default serve 4 months IHL.

Both convicts have since paid the fines while the charcoal has been forfeited to Malawi Government and the motor vehicles have been restored to the owners.

Pilirani Kathyole is from Msulira Village in Traditional Authority Chilowamatambe in Kasungu, Blessings Malamba is from Chibazi Village in Traditional Authority Msakambewa in Dowa and Juma Saizi comes from Kumwembe Village in Traditional Authority Tambala in Dedza
