Gold medallist in 100 metres and 200 metres, Lifa from Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST)said that he was pleased to have won since it was the first time competing.

“Am feeling good, actually I didn’t train much for the games because I was busy catching up with my school work since I took part in the Birmingham Commonwealth games,” he said.

On her part, Mtambalika from DMI Saint John Baptist Mangochi Campus who won a gold medal in discus, silver medal in short put and bronze medal in Javelin said that she prepared and believed that she was going to claim her medals.

“It’s a big achievement to win the gold medal as I competed against some athletes who are national champions in their countries. I managed to win against the same girl who beat me in Angola during the region 5 games in 2016,” she said.

Athletics Coach for TESSAM, Francis Munthali hailed the athletes for the outstanding performance despite the short time they had in camp and encouraged Universities to take sports seriously as done by counterparts from other countries.

“It was good to witness our athletes in the running competitions as they all reached the finals and moving forward University students should actively participate more in National competitions in order to improve,” he said.
