VP Chilima says 1 Cancer Center will open June 2022
Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima says 1 Cancer Center will become operational in the month of June in the year 2022.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday in Lilongwe when he visited the cancer center, Chilima said once operational, the Cancer Center will offer hope to Malawians in need of radiotherapy
According to the Vice President, cancer patients will not be transferred to other countries like India as they will be treated right in the country.
"Very soon, when this Cancer Center is operational, cancer patients will be treated right in the country. We will not be sending them abroad as we have been doing in the past, thereby cutting costs. The center is the only hope to Malawians," said Chilima.
The Vice President was in company of other Government officials such Minister of Health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda.
Chilima also said he is hopeful remaining work on the Cancer center will be finalized by June next year.
“The construction here has gone according to the schedule. The work could have been finished by now if there weren’t any changes. We should have faith that the work will be completed in the 12 months period that the contractors have given, I have no reason to doubt” said Chilima.
The centre is adjacent to Kamuzu Central Hospital center in the capital Lilongwe and will be the first dedicated cancer treatment facility in Malawi.
Construction of the center which started in 2017 is being funded Opec Fund and Malawi Government to the tune of US$14million.
The Center is expected to treat about 2,000 cancer cases every year.
