Woman fined for found in possession of forest produce without licence

A 19-year-old woman in Dowa has been convicted and sentenced to pay a fine of K50 000.00 or in default serve 9 months imprisonment with hard labour for found in possession of forest produce without a licence.

The Dowa First Grade Magistrate's Court through state prosecutor Sergeant Joseph Banda heard that the woman, Florence Saukani, was arrested on February 23 2022 at Kongwe Forest Reserve in Dowa District after being found in possession of two bags of charcoal without a licence contrary to Section 12 of the Forestry Act.

Appearing before court, the woman admitted the charge of found in possession of forest produce without a licence hence she was convicted accordingly.

Passing sentence, First Grade Magistrate Robert Botha said the offender deserved a stiff punishment to send as a warning to others with similar intentions hence sentenced her to pay a fine of K50 000.00 or in default serve 9 months imprisonment with hard labour.

The convict, Florence Saukani, comes from Kadiwa Village in Traditional Authority Msakambewa in Dowa District.

In a related development, the same court has convicted and sentenced 27-year-old man, Mphatso Maliseni, of Dzoole Village in Traditional Authority Dzoole in Dowa District, to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour for stealing a bicycle.

The court through state prosecutor Sergeant Joseph Banda heard that the convict on February 8 2022 at Mtata Village in Dowa District stole a bicycle valued at K72 000.00 belonging to Titani Mputeni.
