Young man in Mangochi imprisoned to three years for robbery

Mangochi, November 17, Mana: Mangochi Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday convicted and sentenced Razaack Kalanje, 20, to three years imprisonment with hard labor after finding him guilty of robbery contrary to section 300 as read with section 301 (1) of the penal code.

Mangochi Police Station prosecution witness, Sub Inspector Jack Thaulo told the court that Kalanje with five accomplices who are currently at large committed the offense on August 8 2021 at Mwalandiridwa Rest House within Mangochi Town.

Thaulo added that Kalanje and his colleagues stole two cell phones and cash amounting to K48, 000 from Daudi Yamikani.

“On September 2 this year, police in the district had a raid within Mangochi Town where officers on duty came across Kalanje and were taken into police cells where an alleged robber who was arrested earlier identified him as someone who took part during the rest house robbery,” said Thaulo.

Kalanje pleaded guilty and admitted to the charge leveled against him but he later said he did not commit the offense which compelled the state to parade two witnesses that testified against him.

In submission, the state prayed for a stiffer penalty saying: “The accused is a first offender but his conduct is bad to the society,” Thaulo said.

Thaulo added that robbery is increasing in the district as such the court should consider giving Kalanje a stiffer punishment.

However, in mitigation, Kalanje asked for the court’s leniency, claiming that he is a student although he failed to produce documents to prove his claim.

Passing judgment, Senior Resident Magistrate Rodrick Michongwe concurred with the state’s appeal for a plea of a stiffer penalty considering the gravity of the case.

Michongwe, therefore, sentenced Kalanje to three years imprisonment with hard labor as a deterrent to would-be offenders.

“The sentence is meant to act as a warning to others and also to correct your behavior because every person has a right to movement and right to security,” Michongwe said.

Kalanje comes from Mtalimanja Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi.
