Mzuzu based young professional change maker Wisdom Moyo has embarked on a project called Nutritional Education for Adolescent Girls which aims at offering free nutrition services to adolescent girls in Mzuzu.
Speaking during the project launch held at Citizen Impact Organization’s (CIO) offices in Mzuzu on Thursday, Moyo said the project seeks to expand and create free access to quality nutrition services among adolescent girls aged 10-19 years residing in Mzuzu city and surrounding areas so as to improve their nutrition outcomes and those of their future children.
Moyo said the services will include nutrition assessment, nutrition counseling, and nutrition education for improved nutrition income.
“As a young professional change maker and food security and nutrition specialist, I am implementing a project which seeks to expand and create free access to nutrition services among adolescent girls aged 10-19 in Mzuzu. Among other services I have planned to offer in this project include nutrition assessment, nutrition counseling and nutrition education for improved nutrition outcomes among our adolescent girls,” said Moyo.
Moyo added that his project will also provide life skills and support on adolescent nutrition in schools and communities in Mzuzu through adolescent girls care girls which will be established to encourage peer support.
He said the project will periodically organize training sessions on nutrition in schools and at the community level, conduct cooking demonstrations on the Malawian six groups, promote healthy dietary habits and lifestyles.
“Apart from offering free nutrition services I have mentioned earlier on, my project will also organize training sessions on nutrition in schools and at the community level, training young adolescent girls in cooking and also promote healthy dietary habits among them” explained Moyo.
In her remarks, CIO Executive Director Chimwemwe Banda, an organization that has been partnered in implementing the project said as an organization they are happy that Moyo has trusted them to work together with their organization in achieving the goals of the project.
She said they are looking forward to making everything done saying the project is a part of what their organization do as well.
“As CIO, we have welcomed this project and feel thankful to be partnered. We have all hope that together we are going to achieve this as the ones implementing the project are part of our organization’s stakeholders. We feel thankful”, Said Banda.
Banda said in achieving the goal of the project, their organization will support the move with peer educators and human work where they will offer field office spaces, volunteers and internees who will be helping in the implementation of the project through awareness campaigns.
In his welcoming remarks, Village Headman Chikoya Nyambose for area 1b said the project is of great help as it will improve the nutrition status of the young girls in the area.
“We are very excited to have this project happening in our area and we hope this will end malnutrition among young girls in this area. This should not just end here in area 1b, reach out many. We are ready to work with you ” said Village Nyambose
The free nutrition services project is a one-year period project started in in March this year and is expected to end in March, 2022 with a grant fund from global change makers.
